John Adams
John Adams, the second president of the United States, was the one who stands up against slavery in the country. He was already making ground-breaking changes to the American colonies’ social and legal structure. As lawyer, he defended the British soldiers during the Boston Massacre who were acquitted.
Clare Foltz
Being an inspiration for the majority of female lawyer, Foltz is best known for being the first female lawyer on the West Coast. She sued the Hastings College of Law for discrimination (not admitting her because of her sex). The California state law was changed to enable all person, man or woman, of different ethnic and racial backgrounds to be accepted by the bar after passing the exam.
Abraham Lincoln
Generally known for his battle against slavery, Lincoln was also a fervent lawyer in Illinois. The 16th President of the United States tackled different kinds of law cases (trials for medical malpractice, corporate misconduct, etc). Getting into the swing of things for more than 20 years, he became one of the most successful presidents on the U.S.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
Commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi, this lawyer liberated India from tyranny. He begun his career in London in 1800, moved to South Africa to pursue his career in law. He was beaten and discriminated and decided to get involved in civil rights cases defending other Indian immigrants.
Sir Thomas More
Before being executed by Henry VIII of England for not recognizing the Church of England, Sir Thomas More served as a counselor to Henry VIII and also as Lord Chancellor. He worked as a diplomat, Speaker of the House of Commons, chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and High Stewart for Oxford and Cambridge universities.
Thurgood Marshall
Denied from the University of Maryland Law School because of the color of his skin, Marshall still managed to continue his studies. After school, he worked as a Chief Counsel for the NAACP. We mostly remember him in helping in drafting the constitution for Ghana and another region –Tanzania.
Alan Dershowitz
Involved in several law cases including Patty Hearst, O.J Thompson or Mike Tyson, Dershowitz is well-known as being the most distinguished defenders of individual rights. He is graduated from Yale Law School and became the youngest full professor of law in Harvard’s history (aged 28).
Nelson Mandela
Mandela worked as lawyer before serving as President of South Africa. He graduates from the University of Witwatersrand and begun campaign for human rights and the country’s unity. He led the anti-apartheid activism to victory.
Thomas Jefferson
This successful lawyer was first a county lieutenant and member of the House of Burgesses. He is famous for being the president writing the Declaration of Independence and set the foundation for the American legal system.
